World Governments Summit: Neuralink’s first implant patient says brain chip helped him reclaim independence

Noland Arbaugh, the pioneering patient to receive a brain-computer interface (BCI) implant from Neuralink, recently shared his transformative experience at the World Governments Summit in Dubai. After enduring paralysis from the shoulders down due to a spinal cord injury, Arbaugh testified that the groundbreaking technology has significantly restored his independence. At the summit, Arbaugh detailed how the implant enables him to operate a computer purely through thought, unlocking new avenues in work, education, and day-to-day activities. The BCI consists of a chip installed in his skull, featuring 64 threads with numerous electrodes that interface with the motor cortex of his brain. He noted that although he cannot physically move, the neural signals linked to movement are still active. "I can't really move, but all the signals are still there. When we did an FMRI, it lit up most on the scans. Now I can control the computer with my thoughts," Arbaugh explained. One of his first actions after receiving the implant was to indulge in his favorite hobby—gaming. "I just played video games for hours, and it was great," he recalled. Since that moment, Arbaugh has expanded his use of the technology to a variety of tasks, from managing social media and emails to conducting interviews and organizing his schedule. This newfound independence has also facilitated his return to academia, where he successfully undertook 22 credit hours and achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA. Looking to the future, Arbaugh aspires to study neuroscience, aiming for a master's degree and eventually a PhD. He expressed hope for the broader implications of brain-computer interfaces, envisioning a time when individuals with spinal cord injuries could regain mobility. "I believe there will come a day when people can enter a hospital with a spinal cord injury and walk out the next day. In my estimation, that’s possible within 10 to 20 years," he stated. Additionally, he emphasized the implant's Bluetooth connectivity, which could allow users to manage everyday devices like wheelchairs with their minds. "As long as the app is uploaded on your device, you'd be able to connect to it and control it," he added. Arbaugh also underscored the vital importance of prioritizing consent and autonomy in the development of such technologies, urging innovators to focus on assisting people rather than becoming overly enamored with the technology's capabilities.
