The Dutch government has decided to step back from its control of Nexperia, a chipmaker owned by China’s Wingtech Technology, marking a significant shift in the ongoing tensions between China and the Netherlands. This decision was made public by Economics Affairs Minister Vincent Karremans, who announced the suspension of a previous order aimed at asserting control over the company due to national security concerns and governance issues. Nexperia, based in Nijmegen, plays a critical role in the global semiconductor market, producing chips essential for the automotive industry. Recent warnings from automakers highlighted a looming shortage of these chips, with Honda recently forced to shut down a factory in Mexico that manufactures the HR-V crossover due to supply constraints. Karremans described the suspension of the control order as a gesture of goodwill, following constructive discussions with Chinese officials. He expressed optimism regarding measures taken by China to secure the supply of chips to Europe and globally. "In light of recent developments, we believe this is the right moment to take a constructive step by suspending my order under the Goods Availability Act," he stated, reflecting the Dutch government's intent to foster better trade relations. This shift comes after the United States had placed Wingtech on its export control list, affecting Nexperia as well. The situation escalated with the removal of Nexperia’s Chinese CEO, Zhang Xuezheng, due to pressure from American officials, which prompted China to temporarily halt the export of Nexperia chips from its facilities. However, Beijing recently lifted this ban, coinciding with improved U.S.-China trade relations following a meeting between President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. While both nations appear to be making conciliatory moves, uncertainty remains about the operational control of Nexperia. Recent reports indicated tensions within the company, with its Chinese division claiming that the Dutch headquarters had stopped shipments of crucial wafers necessary for chip production, potentially jeopardizing their ability to meet demand for finished products.
