Netflix’s $72B WB acquisition confounds the future of movie theaters, streaming

In a historic turn of events, Netflix has emerged victorious in a fierce bidding competition, securing the acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming and movie studios division. This monumental deal, valued at an equity of $72 billion and an estimated total enterprise value of $82.7 billion, is poised to reshape the media industry and send shockwaves through Hollywood for years to come. Warner Bros. Discovery, which boasts a market valuation of approximately $60 billion, will finalize this sale following the separation of its streaming and studio businesses. This transition includes the division of its extensive film and television libraries, alongside the HBO channel and other networks like CNN and TBS, into newly formed entities—Warner Bros. and Discovery Global. This restructuring is anticipated to conclude by the third quarter of 2026. The acquisition is contingent upon receiving regulatory approvals, the backing of WBD shareholders, and fulfilling other standard closing conditions. Netflix is optimistic about the deal's potential, forecasting an increase in subscribers, enhanced viewer engagement, and annual cost savings ranging from $2 to $3 billion by the third year. Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters expressed confidence in leveraging the platform's global reach to introduce Warner Bros. content to a wider audience. However, the announcement left questions regarding the future of current WBD employees, including CEO David Zaslav. Meanwhile, Gunnar Wiedenfels, WBD's CFO, is expected to take the helm of Discovery Global post-split. If this ambitious acquisition moves forward, Netflix will elevate its status from a leading streaming service to a formidable entertainment powerhouse. As of January, Netflix leads the streaming market with over 301 million subscribers, while Warner Bros. Discovery contributes 128 million, primarily through HBO Max.
