Netflix may have paid $600 million for Ben Affleck’s AI startup

In a significant development last week, Netflix revealed its acquisition of InterPositive, an innovative AI company co-founded by actor Ben Affleck. This venture specializes in assisting filmmakers with editing during the post-production phase, and the deal is reported to be valued at up to $600 million, as per Bloomberg's sources. If confirmed, this would position it as one of Netflix's most substantial acquisitions to date, closely following its previous high of around $700 million for the Roald Dahl Story Company. While Netflix has yet to disclose specific details about the transaction, insiders suggest that the upfront cash payment might be less than the reported figure. The agreement potentially includes performance-based incentives that could reward the founders of InterPositive based on future success. InterPositive’s technology is designed to enhance the filmmaking process by addressing issues like continuity and scene enhancement, without generating new content or utilizing footage without permission. This acquisition aligns with Netflix's ongoing strategy to incorporate AI into its content creation processes. The streaming service has already experimented with generative AI in its productions, notably using it to craft a dramatic building-collapse scene in the Argentine series, "The Eternaut." As Netflix advances in this direction, competitors are not far behind. Amazon is developing in-house AI teams dedicated to film and television, while Disney has partnered with OpenAI to explore similar technologies. However, the rising influence of AI in filmmaking has sparked concerns among industry workers about job security and the fairness of compensation for creators whose works are used as training data for AI systems.
