In a bold move to enhance its offerings for younger audiences, Netflix has introduced a new app specifically designed for children's gaming, dubbed Netflix Playground. Announced on Monday, this app is part of the Netflix subscription and promises a family-friendly experience free from advertisements and in-app purchases. Netflix Playground boasts an extensive and ever-expanding library of games tailored for children. Initially launching with beloved characters from popular children's shows, the app is aimed at children aged eight and under. Currently available in countries including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, the Philippines, and New Zealand, it is set to roll out globally on April 28. The app is compatible with both iOS and Android devices. One of the standout features of Netflix Playground is its offline accessibility, allowing children to enjoy games without needing a mobile data or Wi-Fi connection. This makes it an ideal companion for family outings such as long flights or grocery shopping trips. Among the games offered is “Playtime With Peppa Pig,” where players can immerse themselves in Peppa’s world through a variety of playful activities. Another game inspired by “Sesame Street” encourages players to enhance their memory and coordination skills through engaging challenges. Additional titles include “Let’s Color,” “Storybots,” and “Bad Dinosaurs,” among others. John Derderian, Netflix's Vice President of Animation Series and Kids & Family TV, expressed excitement about the app, stating, “We’re building a world where kids can not only watch their favorite stories, they can step inside them and interact with their favorite characters.” He emphasized that Netflix Playground aims to be a seamless platform for discovery, learning, and play, enhancing the viewing and gaming experience for families. Netflix initially ventured into the gaming realm in 2021 with high hopes but faced setbacks as many titles struggled to find an audience. The company has since downsized its gaming ambitions, closing several studios, including Boss Fight and Spry Fox. Despite these challenges, Netflix is exploring new avenues in gaming, including recent party game releases designed for TV, such as Tetris and Pictionary, while also hinting at future cloud gaming developments, albeit still in their infancy.
