Netflix buys Ben Affleck’s AI filmmaking company InterPositive

In a significant move to enhance its filmmaking capabilities, Netflix announced on Thursday that it will acquire InterPositive, a cutting-edge technology company established in 2022 by actor Ben Affleck. This acquisition underscores Netflix's commitment to integrating generative AI into its production processes. The streaming giant has already utilized AI for special effects in various original series and films, assuring investors of its strong position to harness the ongoing advancements in artificial intelligence. Affleck, who has been contemplating the implications of AI on filmmaking since founding InterPositive, expressed his desire to maintain the essence of human storytelling. He emphasized the importance of judgment in storytelling and the need to safeguard human creativity amidst technological advancements. InterPositive is not focused on creating AI-generated actors or performances. Instead, it has developed a model designed to assist production teams in editing their own footage effectively during post-production. This includes addressing continuity errors, adjusting lighting, and enhancing environmental visuals. Affleck noted that extensive research and development led to the creation of a model capable of understanding visual logic and editorial consistency, all while adhering to traditional cinematic principles. The technology is built with safeguards to protect artistic intent, allowing creators to explore innovative tools while retaining control over their narratives. Affleck's role at Netflix will expand as he steps in as a senior advisor, although the financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed. Elizabeth Stone, Netflix’s Chief Product and Technology Officer, commented on the acquisition, stating, "Our approach to AI has always been focused on meaningfully serving the needs of the creative community and our members. The InterPositive team joins us in our belief that innovation should empower storytellers, not replace them."
