In a groundbreaking move, Netflix has officially utilized generative AI for the first time in the production of an original series scene. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos hailed this advancement as an "incredible opportunity" that empowers creators to enhance their films and series, not merely reduce costs. The project team expressed their excitement over the results generated by AI, which was notably faster—achieving completion of a visual effects sequence ten times quicker than traditional methods would have allowed. During a recent earnings call, Sarandos emphasized the positive response from creators and audiences alike, stating, "We were thrilled with the result. And more importantly, the audience was thrilled with the result." The innovative technology was applied to the Argentine science-fiction series, El Eternauta (The Eternaut), where it was used to craft a dramatic scene depicting a collapsing building in Buenos Aires. This particular scene exceeded the project's budget, leading the creators to collaborate with Netflix's product innovation team, Eyeline Studios, to bring it to life using AI. In addition to content creation, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters highlighted the potential of generative AI to enhance user experiences. He described how it could enable viewers to search for films using natural language, such as asking for a "dark psychological thriller from the '80s." This capability marks a significant leap forward from previous search functionalities. Peters also pointed out that generative AI could transform advertising, presenting brands and marketers with new avenues to craft engaging content. He noted, "We think these generative techniques can decrease that hurdle iteratively over time and enable us to do that in more and more spots." As generative AI continues to evolve, the entertainment industry is watching closely, particularly in light of recent strikes and new guidelines regarding its use. The excitement surrounding these advancements hints at a future where storytelling is not just enhanced but redefined altogether.
