In a significant move, Nepal has imposed a ban on major social media platforms including Facebook, YouTube, and X, previously known as Twitter, due to their non-compliance with government registration requirements. The Nepalese authorities assert that the absence of regulation allows users to exploit these platforms for spreading misinformation, promoting hatred, and engaging in cybercriminal activities. Gajendra Thakur, the spokesperson for Nepal's Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, confirmed that an ultimatum was issued to social media companies to register with the government. Following a meeting, the ministry has instructed the Nepal Telecommunication Authority to enforce a ban on 26 social media services effective immediately. While a few companies like TikTok, Viber, WeTalk, Nimbuzz, and Poppo have successfully registered, many prominent platforms, including Meta's services and Reddit, have not submitted their applications. The Nepalese government insists on the necessity of having a local liaison office for these platforms and has introduced a bill in parliament aimed at ensuring responsible management of social media. However, this proposed legislation has faced criticism for potentially infringing on freedom of expression and for being perceived as a tool for censorship against dissenting voices. Concerns have been raised about the bill's implications for fundamental rights in the country. The Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) has publicly opposed the government's decision, arguing that such a ban without providing alternatives not only undermines freedom of expression but also violates the constitutional right to information. As the situation develops, the debate over social media regulation and freedom of speech continues to intensify in Nepal.
