Solo VC and Lovable investor Neil Murray raises third Nordic-focused fund

The Nordic startup scene continues to thrive, as evidenced by the recent announcement from Neil Murray, founder and general partner of The Nordic Web Ventures based in Copenhagen. On Tuesday, Murray revealed the successful closing of his third fund, totaling $6 million, aimed at supporting early-stage entrepreneurs in the region. This new fund, designated as Fund III, will primarily focus on making initial institutional investments in companies engaged in robotics, artificial intelligence, and deep technology. Murray described his previous funds as "test vehicles" to validate his talent-spotting abilities over the past seven years. Since then, he has invested in over 50 startups, cultivating a portfolio that features notable companies such as Lovable, a unicorn, and SafetyWing, an insurance provider for remote workers, along with exits like the UI design firm Uizard. The Nordic ecosystem, encompassing Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, has seen impressive growth, now valued at over half a trillion dollars. In 2024 alone, it attracted more than $8 billion in venture funding, establishing itself as one of Europe's most promising emerging markets. Murray noted that while Fund III received interest exceeding $20 million, he opted to limit it to $6 million, emphasizing that he prioritizes alignment over asset under management (AUM). He believes that maintaining a smaller fund allows him to better align incentives with performance rather than focusing on management fees. With plans to invest approximately $200,000 in each startup, Murray aims to support between 30 and 35 companies. He expressed his belief that investing in top-tier founders is more crucial than merely optimizing for ownership stakes. His limited partner base includes notable institutional investors such as Allocater One and founder Christoph Janz, alongside contributions from operators at tech giants like Meta and Google. Murray has a unique perspective on the Nordic tech landscape, having moved from the UK to Denmark in 2013 with no prior connections. His passion for technology startups led him to create "The Nordic Web," a platform that showcased the burgeoning tech scene and attracted the attention of venture capitalists seeking promising founders. This venture eventually inspired him to launch his first fund in 2017 with an initial investment of $500,000. Today, he asserts that the Nordic region is not just experiencing a fleeting trend but is undergoing a significant transformation characterized by a deep talent pool, ambitious entrepreneurs, and a mature ecosystem. This foundation is paving the way for the next decade of breakout companies in the region, particularly in sectors like AI, robotics, and consumer technology, known for their innovative approaches and methodical development styles.
