Mark Zuckerberg’s illegal school drove his neighbors crazy

The Crescent Park area of Palo Alto, California, is known for its stunning real estate, featuring a diverse array of architectural styles from Tudor revival to modern farmhouse. At the center of this picturesque community lies a sprawling estate owned by Mark Zuckerberg, his wife Priscilla Chan, and their three daughters. Over the years, their property has expanded to encompass 11 previously separate lots, raising eyebrows among local residents. Concerns among neighbors first surfaced in 2016, as they worried that Zuckerberg's property acquisitions were inflating local real estate prices. However, the situation escalated dramatically around five years later when residents discovered that a school appeared to be operating within the Zuckerberg compound. This operation raised legal questions, as it reportedly lacked the necessary permits mandated by the area’s residential zoning regulations. A determined group of neighbors began efforts to bring attention to the issue, which continued until the summer of 2025. Through a public records request submitted to the Palo Alto Department of Planning and Development Services, WIRED obtained a wealth of documents—totaling 1,665 pages—that outline the ongoing neighborhood disputes. These included records from 311 complaints, legal filings, construction plans, and various correspondences. While references to the Zuckerberg family were redacted, other public records confirmed the ownership of the property. The documents suggest that the unpermitted school may have been functioning as early as 2021, with an estimated enrollment of around 30 students, based on observations from local residents. Furthermore, they reveal that for nearly a decade, neighbors have expressed grievances regarding disruptive construction activity, the increased presence of private security personnel, and the influx of staff and visitors that have congested local streets and occupied parking spaces. This ongoing saga underscores the tension between celebrity and community, raising important questions about zoning laws and neighborhood integrity.
