Will AI Help or Wreck Your Summer Vacation?

Will AI Help or Wreck Your Summer Vacation?

During a recent visit to Taiwan, I sought recommendations from ChatGPT for the best beef noodles nearby, specifying that the restaurant must accept credit cards since I was low on local currency. The AI promptly suggested a conveniently located spot known for its delectable beef tendon. I relished the experience of being the only foreigner in this humble eatery, where a plump orange cat lounged beneath one of the metal stools. However, my enjoyment quickly turned to panic when I realized the restaurant only accepted cash, a miscommunication that could have been avoided with a simple Google search. Conversations with fellow travelers revealed that I was fortunate the restaurant existed at all, as many had experienced AI suggesting locations that were either closed or completely fictitious. Despite this hiccup, I found the AI tool exceptionally useful for exploring the city, aiding me not only in finding dining spots but also in translating menus and communicating with locals. It felt like an invaluable travel hack for navigating Asia. Back in Tokyo, where a fluctuating yen has made Japan an appealing destination, I decided to explore various AI platforms like DeepSeek and Manus for itinerary suggestions for newcomers to the city. The results were impressive yet predictable, primarily highlighting the typical tourist attractions featured on sites like Trip Advisor. Some recommendations were outdated, such as a suggestion to stay at a traditional inn that had been closed for over a year. The outputs reflected the AI's reliance on data scraped from the internet, which, while convenient, risks promoting a homogenized travel experience. The tech industry is already facing criticism in popular tourist areas for creating feedback loops that funnel visitors to the same destinations, determined by powerful algorithms. Furthermore, as these AI systems are predominantly trained on English-language data, many local gems may be overlooked. This issue isn't solely attributable to AI; social media has been reshaping travel patterns in Asia for years. For instance, a railroad crossing in my neighborhood became a hotspot for photos after an influencer showcased it on a Chinese social media platform. Similarly, a local swimming spot surged in popularity on TikTok, leading to an unexpected influx of visitors. As AI tools become more prevalent for vacation planning worldwide—from Barcelona to New Orleans—people are increasingly turning to online travel forums to share tips for crafting personalized itineraries with these technologies. However, the limitations of their training data remain a concern. Sometimes, the best advice can come from simply engaging with locals. AI has the potential to bridge language and cultural divides for travelers in ways that were unimaginable just a decade ago, offering undeniable convenience. Yet, it’s essential to remember that some of the most enriching aspects of travel cannot be replicated or optimized by technology.
