The tech job market is undergoing significant changes, with a stark decline in hiring for certain roles while demand for others is surging. Recent data from Indeed reveals that tech job postings have plummeted by 35% since early 2020. A notable portion of this decline occurred during the post-pandemic phase when tech companies recognized they had expanded their workforce too rapidly. The second wave of this downturn coincided with the arrival of ChatGPT in late 2022. Brendon Bernard, a senior economist at Indeed, suggests that while there isn't definitive evidence linking AI advancements to the job market's downturn, the influence of automation may be contributing to the ongoing weakness. "We're witnessing potential AI impacts reflected in the types of tech roles that remain sought after, alongside an increase in experience requirements for the jobs that are still available," he noted. As the landscape shifts, demand for positions in AI and machine learning is on the rise. Conversely, the availability of junior tech roles has decreased dramatically, with more job listings now specifying a requirement of over five years of experience. This trend underscores the evolving expectations in the tech industry. Interestingly, the most successful technology roles may not always be the most glamorous. For instance, positions related to SAP have emerged as highly sought after, underscoring the idea that sometimes the most unassuming technologies can lead to the greatest profitability. Notably, SAP's stock has more than tripled since late 2022, highlighting the value of specialized skills in this area.
