In the midst of rising concerns about the future of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) companies, investor Bill Gurley has shared his thoughts on how to navigate this turbulent landscape. Speaking on CNBC's Squawk Box, the Benchmark general partner addressed the anxiety surrounding the so-called 'SaaSpocalypse.' With stocks of major players like Salesforce, Atlassian, and DocuSign facing declines, many investors are fretting over the emergence of AI generative tools as potential threats to these established firms. Drawing a parallel to historical disruptions in the tech industry, Gurley recalled the significant drop in Facebook's stock following its IPO, attributing it to fears of mobile transition. He noted that the pervasive anxiety affecting today's SaaS market feels unprecedented. "I've never seen a disruption that had this much anxiety and go across so many companies," he remarked. However, he pointed out that even AI-driven companies continue to rely on traditional software providers, citing Anthropic, the creator of the Claude chatbot, as a case in point. Gurley encouraged investors to adopt a mindset reminiscent of Warren Buffett, particularly in times of market panic. He argued that instead of lamenting falling prices, savvy investors should take advantage of the situation by acquiring shares at lower prices. "You should be quiet and picking them up off the floor," he advised. Moreover, Gurley expressed concerns about the increasingly intricate relationships between AI firms and the infrastructure companies that support them. He referenced a recent deal between Meta and Advanced Micro Devices, where Meta agreed to purchase significant computing power from AMD, potentially resulting in Meta acquiring a stake in the chipmaker. Gurley drew parallels to previous corporate scandals, warning that the nature of these intertwined agreements could pose future challenges. Despite these worries, Gurley maintained an optimistic view on the role of AI in enhancing workforce capabilities. He referred to AI as "jet fuel" for those eager to excel in their careers, suggesting that these tools can drastically boost learning and productivity. "You can learn faster than you could have ever learned at any point in history right now," he stated, highlighting the transformative potential of AI. In a reflection on his career, Gurley affirmed his passion for venture capital, stating he wouldn't choose a different path even in a uniformly compensated society. His insights underscore a complex yet hopeful perspective on the intersection of AI and the evolving SaaS market.
