Since its launch in 2016, the Rebelle Rally has transformed from a humble event into a premier off-road challenge for women, now recognized as the longest competitive rally in the United States. Spanning over 2,000 kilometers across rugged landscapes, this unique rally emphasizes navigational skills over speed, requiring teams to rely solely on maps and their instincts for eight intense days. Participants, organized in teams of two, are tasked with plotting their route to locate numerous checkpoints—some of which are not marked on any map. The absence of GPS, cell phones, or support crews adds an extra layer of difficulty, making each successful navigation feel like a significant achievement. The event features two main vehicle categories: the 4×4 class, which includes popular models like the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco, and the X-Cross class for vehicles like the Honda Passport and BMW X5. Notably, many competitors aim for the prestigious Bone Stock award, showcasing that heavy vehicle modifications are not a prerequisite for success. This year, in celebration of its tenth anniversary, I took on the role of driver once again, steering a 2025 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness alongside my navigator, Kendra Miller. With a history of podium finishes, I was eager to reconnect with the challenges that make this rally so distinctive. Each morning, as Kendra meticulously plotted over 20 coordinates on our maps—an intricate process that demands focus—I found myself reflecting on the innovative setup at our base camp. At dawn, the air was still cool as we emerged from our cozy tents, greeted by the bright lights powered by Renewable Innovations’ mobile microgrid, a blend of solar energy and hydrogen fuel cells capable of generating up to 750 kWh. This advanced system not only illuminated our workspace for navigation but also powered essential amenities, allowing competitors and staff to recharge and refresh. Despite being situated 100 miles from civilization, the camp buzzed with life, from the sizzling morning tater tots in the kitchen to the camaraderie during the daily drivers’ meeting. It’s a reminder that while we are far from home, the Rebelle Rally offers a unique sense of community and adventure that feels just right.
