From price hikes to working with chip brokers, Framework's CEO tells us how he's navigating the memory shortage

The ongoing memory shortage is significantly impacting the cost of manufacturing consumer electronics. In this challenging landscape, how does a small startup like Framework, known for its modular computers, manage to thrive? Nirav Patel, Framework's CEO, sheds light on the strategies his company employs to navigate this crisis. As demand for memory chips surges, driven by the expanding needs of AI companies and major tech firms, smaller manufacturers find themselves squeezed. The three dominant memory producers—Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix—are prioritizing large clients, leading to inflated prices and long-term contracts that disadvantage smaller players. Patel, who was part of the founding team at Oculus, transitioned from the fast-paced world of VR to the more stable realm of traditional computing. He notes that his experience at a large corporation taught him the importance of agility in a startup environment. "Framework was created to innovate in a mature sector of consumer electronics where new ideas have largely run dry," he explains. Currently, Framework employs around 75 people across the U.S. and Taiwan and has successfully raised funding over the years, operating independently for over two years. Patel recalls the initial signs of the memory shortage emerging last year, prompting the company to maintain close contact with suppliers. The unexpected speed of the supply-demand imbalance has required nimbleness and creativity from his team. As for pricing, Patel acknowledges that the current environment leaves little room for maintaining desired price points. "It’s not just about keeping prices stable; it’s about securing enough supply to continue our manufacturing processes," he states. Thanks to direct relationships with suppliers, Framework has managed to stay in production, leveraging its size to be more adaptable than larger corporations. Patel emphasizes that major tech firms have it easier due to established relationships with suppliers, allowing them to secure priority access to memory chips. In contrast, Framework focuses on transparency with its team, fostering an environment where employees are informed about the company's financial and supply situations. Despite the challenges of rising costs, Framework has made strategic adjustments, such as removing standalone memory sales from its marketplace to ensure that the focus remains on providing computers rather than simply profiting from memory sales. Patel explains that the company regularly reviews supplier price trends to adjust their product pricing accordingly, rather than making preemptive increases. While the company has seen a decrease in sales following price hikes, Patel remains optimistic about the long-term demand for computers. He acknowledges the frustrating nature of the current supply chain dynamics but maintains a realistic perspective on capitalism's challenges. Looking ahead, Patel anticipates that significant improvements in memory manufacturing capacity may not materialize until late 2027 or early 2028, contingent on market demand dynamics. As Framework continues to navigate these turbulent times, Patel's leadership and the team's collaborative spirit stand as a testament to their resilience in the face of adversity.
