The cofounder of Wiz, Google's $32 billion acquisition target, says vibe coding must be met with 'vibe security'

Earlier this year, Google announced its intention to acquire Wiz, an Israeli-American cloud security startup, for a staggering $32 billion. This acquisition marks Google's largest deal to date and signals a potential shift in the landscape of major tech mergers, with regulatory approval still pending. Ami Luttwak, co-founder and chief technology officer of Wiz, reflects on this moment as reminiscent of their previous journey, which saw the same team sell their earlier startup, Adallom, to Microsoft in 2015. Since its inception in March 2020, Wiz has swiftly adapted to the changing tech environment, pivoting from network security to cloud protection as the pandemic pushed businesses to transition to cloud services rapidly. In just 18 months, Wiz achieved an impressive $100 million in annual recurring revenue. However, with the rise of artificial intelligence enabling developers to code at unprecedented speeds, Luttwak warns that security teams are struggling to keep pace with the growing number of attack surfaces. Luttwak advocates for a concept he describes as "vibe security," suggesting that as developers can now rapidly create applications, security measures must evolve in tandem. In an interview at Business Insider's New York headquarters, he discussed the challenges of maintaining security in a fast-paced development environment and emphasized the need for collaboration between developers and security teams. Historically, security in the enterprise was a centralized process, where developers would seek guidance before proceeding with projects. Today, however, the dynamics have shifted significantly. Developers can produce applications in a fraction of the time it once took, leading to a misalignment with security protocols that are often perceived as cumbersome. "Security needs to be integrated into the development process, not treated as an afterthought," Luttwak stated. He believes in democratizing security, making it accessible and manageable for all developers, so they can take ownership of security without needing to be experts. As for hiring, Luttwak notes that talent acquisition has changed. Technical candidates are now well aware of the importance of cybersecurity, and the pitch has evolved to highlight the exciting challenges of staying ahead of potential threats. Wiz is also navigating the complexities of customer expectations, with some clients eager to leverage AI capabilities while others express concerns about its risks. Luttwak acknowledges the balancing act required to harness AI's potential without compromising customer security. With the rapid advancements in AI, he remains optimistic about Wiz's ability to adapt and thrive in a competitive landscape, likening their understanding of security to a comprehensive mapping system that integrates various layers of data. As the cloud security space continues to evolve, Luttwak emphasizes the importance of using data effectively to empower security teams in this new era.
