Claude Code's creator explains the limits of vibe coding

The emergence of vibe coding is reshaping the landscape of software development, but its limitations are becoming clear. Boris Cherny, the engineer behind Anthropic's Claude Code, recently shared his thoughts on this innovative approach during an episode of "The Peterman Podcast." He emphasized that while vibe coding has its merits, it is not a catch-all solution for every coding scenario. Cherny pointed out that vibe coding is particularly effective for creating temporary code and prototypes that are not critical to the overall system's functionality. However, he cautioned against relying on this method for every project, noting that maintainability and careful consideration are essential for robust coding practices. "I do this all the time, but it's definitely not the thing you want to do all the time," he remarked, highlighting the need for thoughtful coding at times. Launched earlier this year, Claude Code is part of Anthropic's strategy to enhance AI's role in software development workflows. Its capabilities have garnered attention from both seasoned developers and those with little technical expertise, allowing them to create software using natural language commands. Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, indicated that Claude was responsible for generating 90% of the coding tasks within the company. For critical coding assignments, Cherny adopts a collaborative approach, working alongside AI models to draft code. He typically initiates the process by requesting a plan from the AI and then refining the implementation step by step. "I might ask it to improve the code or clean it up," he explained, indicating that for areas where he has strong preferences, he still prefers to write the code manually. Cherny also acknowledged that while AI models have made significant strides, their coding capabilities are still limited. He stated, "There's still so much room to improve, and this is the worst it's ever going to be," reflecting on the rapid advancements in the field over the past year. According to him, the current state of AI coding is a far cry from just a year ago when it primarily featured basic type-ahead autocomplete functionalities. The tech industry is increasingly embracing AI-assisted coding. Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently noted that vibe coding is transforming the coding experience, making it accessible even to individuals without technical backgrounds. He expressed excitement about the evolving landscape, stating, "Things are getting more approachable, it's getting exciting again, and the amazing thing is, it's only going to get better." Pichai highlighted that AI is now responsible for generating over 30% of new code at Google, a notable increase from 25% in the previous year. This rapid adoption enables developers to produce software swiftly, sometimes without even closely monitoring the code. However, industry leaders remain vigilant about the technology's limitations. AI-generated code may still contain errors, lack concise structure, or fail to meet necessary security standards. Pichai reiterated the importance of caution, especially for large codebases where precision and security are paramount.
