Google CEO Sundar Pichai says booing graduates will shape AI's future — and live with its consequences

In an era dominated by artificial intelligence, tech CEOs find themselves not only managing company performance but also addressing the anxieties of the next generation. This year's graduation ceremonies have seen notable disruptions, with students voicing their concerns during speeches from corporate leaders who expressed optimism about AI's impact on the future job market. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt faced boos at the University of Arizona, while Scott Borchetta, CEO of Big Machine Records, encountered backlash at Middle Tennessee State University for discussing AI's influence on music and media. In light of this trend, the hosts of the tech podcast "Hard Fork" recently posed a question to Google CEO Sundar Pichai about his approach to potential heckling during his upcoming commencement address at Stanford University. Pichai acknowledged the legitimate worries of graduates entering a workforce increasingly influenced by AI. "I've always been extraordinarily optimistic about the next generation," he stated, emphasizing that his aim is to share personal insights and experiences. He recognized that graduates will play a crucial role in shaping the future of AI while also grappling with its repercussions. Although Stanford is located in Silicon Valley, where AI innovation thrives, public perception of the technology remains cautious. A Pew Research Center survey revealed that about half of Americans feel more anxious than excited about the growing presence of AI in their lives. Additionally, many communities resist the establishment of data centers necessary for powering AI applications like chatbots. The introduction of AI has also had significant implications for employment, with numerous companies attributing layoffs to enhanced efficiency driven by AI. New graduates are facing a challenging job market, with the unemployment rate for this group hitting a four-year high at the beginning of 2026. Pichai noted that the rapid pace of change can understandably provoke anxiety, stating, "Humans aren't evolved to process that much change," and recognizing the unprecedented scale of transformation. Earlier this month, at Carnegie Mellon University's graduation ceremony, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang articulated a more optimistic view, asserting that AI could ultimately benefit humanity, including those just starting their careers. "Now it's your time to realize your dreams," he encouraged the graduates, highlighting that the timing for their ambitions could not be better.
