We tried out xAI's Grok chatbot while driving a Tesla in NYC. Here's what happened.

Mike Nelson, a Tesla owner and experienced lawyer, has been utilizing the AI chatbot Grok during his drives for several months, finding it both engaging and potentially hazardous. In a recent demonstration around the New York City area, he showcased Grok’s capabilities, which include voice commands for navigation and a wide range of conversational topics. Nelson, who has represented numerous Tesla owners in legal cases, expressed satisfaction with his Model Y SUV. However, he acknowledges the growing concerns surrounding AI in vehicles. Grok, developed by xAI, is still in beta but aims to provide drivers with hands-free access to information, such as nearby charging stations and dining options. While this technology could mitigate distractions from smartphones and maps, it may also introduce a new level of distraction that drivers are not yet fully aware of, as noted by Philip Koopman, an expert in autonomous vehicles. Since its rollout in July 2025, Grok has become a primary source of entertainment for Nelson during his commutes. He enjoys asking it diverse questions, transforming his driving experience. Previously, he would listen to music or podcasts, but now his focus is on interacting with Grok. While using Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system, which requires active supervision, Nelson admitted that Grok may heighten the risks associated with this technology, particularly in a bustling urban environment like New York City. During a ride along, Nelson remarked on the chaotic nature of intersections, admitting he was more engaged with Grok than the road. Koopman emphasized the dangers of multitasking while driving, noting that true focus should always remain on the task of driving. Distracted driving remains a critical issue, with over 3,000 fatalities reported annually in the U.S. Grok’s ability to sometimes provide incorrect information also raises concerns. Nelson experienced this firsthand when Grok initially claimed it could adjust his vehicle's climate and seating, only to later contradict itself. Additionally, Grok's NSFW mode has sparked controversy, especially after reports of inappropriate responses to minors. While acknowledging the impressive capabilities of Grok, Nelson remains cautious about the implications of AI technology in vehicles. As Tesla continues to innovate, the balance between enhancing driver experience and ensuring safety remains a significant challenge in the evolving landscape of automotive AI.
