Claude Code's product chief says people have serious FOMO over AI's relentless pace

The head of product at Claude Code has expressed awareness of the mounting stress users are feeling due to the rapid pace of AI developments. In a recent episode of "Lenny's" podcast, Cat Wu, who leads product initiatives at Claude Code and Cowork, discussed the pervasive fear of missing out that many users experience as new AI products are unveiled almost daily. Wu noted that the introduction of new tools is causing a sense of urgency among users, compelling them to constantly check platforms like Twitter for updates. "With these agentic tools, not just from Claude Code and Cowork but across the entire ecosystem, people feel this need to check in daily to see the latest offerings," she stated. She emphasized the need for solutions that would alleviate the feeling of being on an ever-accelerating treadmill of updates. Since joining the AI lab in 2024, Wu pointed out that traditionally, companies would release features on a monthly or quarterly basis, allowing users to stay informed with less effort. However, the current competitive landscape is pushing companies, including large tech firms and startups, to release innovations at an unprecedented speed, often resulting in overlapping functionalities. Wu expressed her desire for products that would simplify the user experience, stating, "I would love people to feel like they can just open these tools, and that they will educate or guide them on what they want to learn, allowing for a more seamless interaction." During the podcast, she also acknowledged that this rapid pace is impacting Anthropic itself. "With AI evolving so swiftly and a plethora of concepts to explore, we occasionally find ourselves with overlapping features," she mentioned. In recent months, the frontier model lab has been focused on enhancing its capabilities in AI coding, consistently rolling out new models and product updates for Claude Code, which has transitioned from a terminal-based coding assistant to a comprehensive AI-powered workspace offering plugins, memory features, and multiple agent functionalities. A tech blog monitoring Anthropic's progress reported that the company launched over 45 new features in just the first three months of this year. However, this surge in releases has not been without complications. Users have reported a noticeable drop in the quality of responses from Claude Code, leading the company to clarify that it did not intentionally degrade performance. Instead, they identified several issues that may have led to a subpar user experience. Claude Code competes in the AI-assisted coding sector with notable rivals such as Cursor and Codex from OpenAI, as well as startups like Lovable, Bolt, and Emergent.
