Huge opportunities for tech companies in AI age, but transition will be painful: HCL Tech MD & CEO

In recent discussions, the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the software services sector has sparked considerable debate, particularly about its potential to disrupt an industry that supports millions of jobs and generates substantial revenue. C. Vijayakumar, the Managing Director and CEO of HCLTech, emphasized that this is not the time to give up on the sector. Instead, he foresees significant opportunities arising from the integration of AI. However, Vijayakumar cautioned that the transition will be challenging and will require extensive reskilling of the workforce. He remarked, "In previous transitions, such as those seen with cloud and digital technologies, the demand for labor increased. This time, many tasks currently performed by our workforce could be executed more efficiently through AI. Therefore, this transition is unique and will be painful, as it fundamentally involves people." The CEO highlighted that the real challenge lies in scaling AI adoption within enterprises to achieve measurable results. He noted that HCLTech is making substantial investments in developing intellectual properties aimed at facilitating this transition. During his speech at the Nasscom Technology and Leadership Forum in Mumbai, he pointed out a significant trend: a trillion-dollar capital expenditure is being allocated globally to construct AI data centers, which will translate to at least $100 billion in services dedicated to the design, implementation, and ongoing management of these facilities. Vijayakumar identified the burgeoning field of physical AI as a tremendous opportunity, with an estimated market value of $1 trillion, which could also lead to around $100 billion in service expenditures related to solution development and deployment across various industries. He expressed that the recent market downturn affecting software company shares may have been exaggerated. Vijayakumar noted that the complexities of the real world mean that companies cannot simply replace legacy systems with AI. Additionally, he pointed out a significant gap between the rapid evolution of technology and its adoption in the enterprise sector, indicating that these discrepancies will pose ongoing challenges. "To realize the value of cutting-edge AI technologies and models, service companies are essential for successful implementation," he explained. He also underscored the enduring relevance of core software engineering principles, while predicting a growing demand for specialized skills in cloud computing, AI, data management, and cybersecurity. Vijayakumar concluded by stressing the importance of reskilling, stating, "We must focus intensely on reskilling our engineers to become proficient users of AI." He acknowledged that while tools may expedite code creation, human oversight remains crucial for successful deployment.
