The transformative potential of AI is becoming increasingly evident in our daily lives. Many users, myself included, find ourselves turning to tools like ChatGPT more frequently. However, frustrations can also arise when these systems falter at simple tasks, leading to moments of exasperation that make us question their reliability. This conundrum has been aptly described as 'the jagged frontier,' a term introduced in a recent research paper. As Anastasios Angelopoulos, CEO and cofounder of LMArena, humorously pointed out, AI can excel in complex computations while struggling with basic organizational tasks, likening it to 'a Ferrari in math but a donkey at putting things in your calendar.' Recent studies, including one from MIT, reveal that a staggering 95% of companies see little to no return on their AI investments, fueling debates about whether the AI boom is a bubble on the verge of bursting. With around $2 trillion in investments at stake, this is a critical issue. Yet, regardless of its current limitations, AI is here to stay. The pressing question is not about its longevity but rather understanding which tasks AI can handle effectively today and which ones might remain out of its reach for the foreseeable future. As we continue to experiment with this technology, it becomes vital to identify the practical applications that can enhance efficiency in our everyday lives.
