Despite Cloudflare's decision to reduce its workforce by 20% earlier this year, the company has significantly increased its engineering staff. The number of engineers at Cloudflare rose from 1,308 in December to an impressive 1,894, marking a staggering 45% increase according to LinkedIn data analyzed by BNP Paribas. When questioned about this trend, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince confirmed the statistics and provided insights into the evolving dynamics of the tech workforce. He emphasized that the impact of artificial intelligence is reshaping job roles within companies, suggesting that AI is not eliminating tech jobs but rather transforming them. According to Prince, there are three primary categories of jobs within modern organizations: builders, sellers, and measurers. Builders are the innovators who create products, while sellers are those who engage with customers and facilitate purchases. In contrast, measurers are tasked with tracking and managing various business operations. Prince noted that in the age of AI, builders enjoy a secure position. As AI tools enhance productivity among engineers, Cloudflare is poised to hire even more builders. On the other hand, sellers continue to play a crucial role as customers prefer to engage with trusted individuals who understand their needs. However, the measurers are facing the brunt of job reductions, as AI increasingly automates their functions. This shift has led to a focus on investing in builders while reducing the number of employees in measuring roles.
