This cybersecurity CEO says we're in an AI bubble. These are the 3 things he looks for when investing in a startup.

In the ever-evolving realm of technology, Shlomo Kramer, CEO of Cato Networks, has voiced his perspective on the current state of artificial intelligence investments, likening it to the dot-com bubble of the late 1990s. Despite his belief that the AI sector is experiencing inflated valuations, Kramer remains optimistic about the long-term potential of AI technologies. He emphasizes that, although the advancements in AI may not be occurring as rapidly as predicted, their eventual impact will be significant. Kramer, a seasoned entrepreneur, continues to invest in AI startups, asserting that some companies possess real promise despite market overvaluation. His investment philosophy hinges on three essential criteria: a strong team, a viable market, and a compelling product. When assessing a product, he looks for a clear and intuitive concept—something that resonates immediately without requiring extensive justification. Moreover, he highlights the importance of scalability, suggesting that a product should ideally possess the potential to develop into a broader platform over time. Finally, Kramer insists that the founding team must have a well-defined vision for how their product can transition into a sustainable business model. Having made approximately 67 investments in various sectors, including successful firms like Palo Alto Networks and Gong, Kramer acknowledges his learning curve. While predominantly focused on cybersecurity, his curiosity has led him to explore AI applications in diverse fields such as pharmaceuticals and marketing. However, he admits that these ventures have not always yielded positive outcomes, emphasizing the necessity of having a deep understanding of the market. Reflecting on his journey, Kramer notes that the most successful startups often originate from a direct response to a specific need within a team. He recalls how his first venture, Check Point Software Technologies, thrived due to its founders' intimate understanding of customer challenges. This foundational insight is what enabled them to develop effective solutions, ultimately contributing to Check Point's impressive market valuation of approximately $18.9 billion today.
