A software engineer says there's a 'vampiric effect' to AI, where vibe-coding sprints are followed by naps to cope with AI fatigue

A prominent software engineer has raised alarm bells over the toll that artificial intelligence (AI) can take on professionals in the tech industry. Steve Yegge, who has an extensive background including early work with Jeff Bezos at Amazon and a lengthy tenure at Google, emphasized the importance of setting limits to avoid being overwhelmed by AI's demands. In a recent discussion with "The Pragmatic Engineer" newsletter and podcast, Yegge described what he calls a 'vampiric effect' associated with AI. This phenomenon refers to the initial excitement and productivity that AI can inspire, which is often followed by significant fatigue. He cautioned that while AI can boost productivity in engineering teams, there is a risk of burnout if companies do not recognize the limits of their workforce. Yegge advised that leaders in tech need to understand the reality of AI-induced productivity. He stated, "You might only get three productive hours out of a person who's vibe coding at max speed." This raises critical questions about work-life balance in tech environments. He suggests that organizations should consider allowing engineers to work shorter hours to maintain their well-being, or risk damaging their teams. Concerns around 'AI fatigue' are being echoed by other engineers. Siddhant Khare, a developer of AI tools, shared his own experiences of burnout due to the accelerated pace of work driven by AI technologies. Yegge urged his peers to develop the skills necessary to push back against excessive demands. As engineers grapple with this new reality, Yegge noted a troubling trend: an increase in daytime napping among his colleagues. He remarked, "I find myself napping during the day... We're starting to get tired and cranky." This highlights the urgent need for the tech industry to address the challenges posed by AI fatigue and prioritize the mental health of its workforce.
