In the fast-paced world of artificial intelligence, OpenAI stands at the forefront, led by a select group of executives navigating the company's strategic direction. As OpenAI prepares for a potential IPO and faces increasing pressure to validate its valuation amid stiff competition from tech giants, this small circle of leaders is crucial to its journey. Currently, CEO Sam Altman oversees ten direct reports, including notable figures such as Greg Brockman, the co-founder and president, Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki, and Chief Research Officer Mark Chen. A significant addition to this leadership team is Fidji Simo, who recently took on the role of CEO of Applications. With an impressive background as the former CEO of Instacart and a leading role at Meta, Simo is tasked with expanding OpenAI's consumer and enterprise product lines into a significant revenue-generating entity. Since her arrival, Simo has already made a mark by launching advertisements and several updates to the company’s enterprise offerings. As per the organizational chart from February, she manages 13 direct reports, including Nick Turley, the head of ChatGPT, and Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar. Notably, some of her team members, like Turley, were previously reporting directly to Altman. Barret Zoph, who returned to OpenAI in January as the general manager of B2B, also reports to Simo. Zoph previously departed from OpenAI in February 2025 to co-found Thinking Machine Labs alongside former CTO Mira Murati. Both Altman and Simo have their own administrative staff providing support. The leadership dynamics at OpenAI are characterized by rapid changes; for instance, last week, Charles Porch, who formerly led partnerships at Instagram, joined the company to work directly with Simo. Additionally, Altman recently announced the hiring of Peter Steinberger, known for his work on the viral AI agent platform OpenClaw. In comparison to other major tech leaders, Altman's direct reports are fewer; for example, Tesla’s Elon Musk had 19, and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang had 36 as of 2025. However, the number of direct reports does not fully represent the overall team size. According to insiders, Simo manages nearly two-thirds of the company’s workforce. Dane Stuckey, the Chief Information Security Officer, oversees more than 20 direct reports, while Peter Welinder, who focuses on hardware, leads a team of over 50. As OpenAI continues to evolve, the leadership team will play an essential role in shaping its future and navigating the complexities of the AI landscape.
