Elon Musk's Boring Co. tunnels aren't wanted by most Nashville residents

Elon Musk's Boring Company revealed ambitious plans in July to construct a 20-mile tunnel system in Nashville aimed at transporting passengers between downtown and the airport using Tesla vehicles. Initially, the project garnered enthusiastic support from Republican Governor Bill Lee, who hailed it as a revolutionary initiative. However, recent sentiments among Nashville residents suggest a significant shift in perception. A survey conducted by Vanderbilt University indicates that 51% of locals disapprove of the Music City Loop project, especially when they learn of Musk's involvement. The poll highlights that public support for the tunnel is significantly swayed by political affiliations, with opposition increasing from 35% to 51% when Musk's name is mentioned. Musk's controversial political ventures, including a $300 million investment to support Donald Trump's 2024 presidential campaign, have likely influenced local opinions. Despite the pushback, the Metro Nashville Council has formally opposed the Music City Loop, while state Republican leaders have authorized The Boring Company to proceed with tunneling under state highways. In addition, Tennessee is contemplating legislation that could allow the state to collect fees from such projects and prioritize federal transit grants. If passed, this bill could limit Nashville's ability to address vital safety and environmental concerns associated with the tunnels. Concerns have been raised by city council members and residents about The Boring Company's previous performance, particularly its track record during the construction of a tunnel at the Las Vegas Convention Center, which was marred by numerous violations, including missed inspections and worker injuries. Proponents of the Music City Loop argue that the project could generate construction jobs and ease Nashville's traffic woes. Meanwhile, The Boring Company has set its sights on expanding to other U.S. cities, including Baltimore, Dallas, and New Orleans, through a competition called the Tunnel Vision Challenge, which promises winning cities a free mile of tunnel construction. However, the Baltimore Ravens recently declined Musk's offer after initial discussions.
