Nasdaq to invest $50 million in Winklevoss-founded crypto exchange Gemini

Gemini, the cryptocurrency exchange established by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, has secured a significant investment from Nasdaq, marking a pivotal moment as it approaches its initial public offering this week. CNBC has confirmed that Nasdaq will inject $50 million into the crypto platform, setting the stage for a strategic partnership that will enable Nasdaq to provide Gemini's custodial services to its financial institution clients. In addition to the investment, Gemini is set to collaborate with Nasdaq as a distribution partner for its trade management system, Calypso. This partnership comes amidst Gemini's plans to raise up to $317 million during its public debut on Nasdaq, which is scheduled for Friday. A spokesperson for Nasdaq emphasized the importance of expanding capabilities to serve institutional clients and adapt to the evolving regulatory environment surrounding crypto assets. "To prepare for future developments while maintaining an open-ecosystem approach to market infrastructure, we will partner with Gemini on a non-exclusive basis as part of a broader strategy to offer multi-custodial and staking services for crypto assets," the spokesperson stated. They also noted that the approach taken with Gemini aligns with Nasdaq Ventures' typical investment structures. This announcement follows Nasdaq's recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, where it proposed a rule change to facilitate the trading of tokenized stocks and exchange-traded products. If approved, this change would position Nasdaq as the first major traditional stock exchange to permit trading in tokenized securities. Tokenization involves creating digital representations of publicly traded securities and real-world assets on a blockchain, allowing for innovative ownership structures. Founded in 2014, Gemini has grown significantly, currently holding over $21 billion in assets on its platform as of the end of July, showcasing its rising prominence in the cryptocurrency market.
