In a dramatic turn of events, one of NASA's three WB-57 aircraft executed an emergency belly landing at Ellington Field in southeastern Houston on Tuesday morning. Eyewitness footage from KHOU 11 captured the moment the aircraft touched down on the runway, completely devoid of its landing gear. The pilot skillfully maintained control as the plane skidded along the runway, gradually coming to a halt thanks to friction. Fortunately, all crew members aboard the aircraft emerged unharmed. NASA spokesperson Bethany Stevens reported, "Today, a mechanical issue with one of NASA’s WB-57s resulted in a gear-up landing at Ellington Field. Response to the incident is ongoing, and all crew are safe at this time. As with any incident, a thorough investigation will be conducted by NASA into the cause. NASA will transparently update the public as we gather more information." The WB-57 aircraft lineage dates back to 1944 when it was developed by the English Electric Company. Its legacy includes a historic transatlantic flight in 1951, which showcased the plane's capabilities. The United States Air Force subsequently acquired the aircraft to replace the aging Douglas B-26 Invader, utilizing it for various missions, including bombing operations during the Vietnam War. A specialized variant, the WB-57, features extended wings allowing it to soar to altitudes of up to 62,000 feet. This elevation is particularly advantageous for weather reconnaissance and atmospheric sampling, especially in efforts to monitor nuclear debris in areas where atmospheric tests were suspected.
