“I’ll buy 10 of those”—NASA science chief yearns for mass-produced satellites

The landscape of space exploration is evolving rapidly, with more avenues for accessing space than ever before. This shift is largely driven by the rise of commercial rocket launches, particularly the reusable Falcon 9 from SpaceX. Despite this expansion, NASA is launching significantly fewer telescopes and planetary missions compared to 25 years ago. Interestingly, the issue isn't primarily financial. NASA's science budget stands at $7.25 billion this year, which, when adjusted for inflation, is comparable to its budget in 2000. This is noteworthy considering the attempts made by the previous administration to slash funding for NASA’s science initiatives. Under the leadership of Administrator Jared Isaacman, there has been an evident emphasis on human spaceflight and lunar exploration. This focus is underscored by the success of the Artemis II mission, which recently saw four astronauts orbit the Moon. In recent months, Isaacman has initiated significant changes to the Artemis program, including the cancellation of a planned lunar space station in favor of establishing a base on the Moon's surface. On the robotic exploration front, Isaacman is advocating for NASA to develop a groundbreaking nuclear-powered spacecraft set to launch in 2028. This mission aims to send three drone rotorcraft to Mars for exploration purposes. While Isaacman has not elaborated much on potential changes to NASA's science program, he has defended proposed budget cuts from the previous administration, a stance consistent with his political background. Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s science mission directorate, shared insights into Isaacman's approach, stating, "He is very enthusiastic about accelerating our efforts while reducing costs. His mantra is to have more opportunities for exploration. Instead of focusing solely on high-budget projects, he encourages the pursuit of multiple missions at a lower cost, aiming for ten missions at $100 million each to enhance our scientific endeavors."
