NASA is introducing a new character to its deep space exploration narrative: Uncle Traveling Matt, a beloved figure from the Jim Henson Company’s Fraggle Rock. The stage production, titled Fraggle Rock: A Space-y Adventure, has replaced the previous show at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, which featured the iconic Snoopy. In this vibrant new performance, the Fraggles embark on an exciting journey to explore what they call 'outer outer space'—a humorous twist on the concept of space as humans know it. John Tartaglia, who serves as the show's director, writer, and choreographer, shared insights about the character development process. He noted that Uncle Matt has always believed he had seen everything, stating, 'Oh, I’ve explored outer space'—referring to the world of humans. This new adventure aims to challenge that belief, taking him beyond his previous understanding. Tartaglia emphasized the importance of differentiating between the Fraggles' perspective of 'outer space' and the true vastness of the universe. The show cleverly designates the latter as 'outer outer space.' Although it's uncertain if this concept will continue after the NASA collaboration, Tartaglia expressed openness to its future potential. As the curtain rises on Fraggle Rock: A Space-y Adventure, familiar characters like Gobo and Red remain at home, while audiences at the Kennedy Space Center are immersed in the Fraggles’ whimsical journey. Tartaglia described the creative challenge of connecting these two worlds while honoring the essence of both realities.
