Managers on alert for “launch fever” as pressure builds for NASA’s Moon mission

NASA is gearing up for an extraordinary journey as its Space Launch System (SLS) rocket prepares to transport four astronauts on a mission around the Moon. This monumental event will take place early Saturday morning on Florida's Space Coast when the rocket, mounted on a colossal crawler transporter, makes its way from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the launch pad. Scheduled to begin at approximately 7:00 am EST (11:00 UTC), the rollout will see the SLS and its mobile launch platform traverse a four-mile stretch to Launch Complex 39B. This impressive crawler, recognized by Guinness as the heaviest self-propelled vehicle on Earth, is expected to take between eight to ten hours to complete the journey. This rollout is a pivotal moment for NASA's Artemis II mission, marking the first time humans will journey to the vicinity of the Moon since the Apollo missions concluded in December 1972. Unlike its predecessors, Artemis II will not land on the lunar surface. Instead, a crew of four—comprising NASA's Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen—will orbit the Moon, venturing several thousand miles beyond it. This mission will set a new record for the farthest distance humans have traveled from our planet, culminating in a thrilling reentry over the Pacific Ocean at a staggering speed of 25,000 mph (40,000 km/h). The journey kicks off with a deliberate pace as the 11 million-pound vehicle makes its way eastward, negotiating turns and an incline to reach its launch site. NASA's Artemis II launch director, Charlie Blackwell-Thompson, noted, "We will be at a cruising speed of under one mile per hour," emphasizing the careful maneuvering required along the route. Originally constructed 60 years ago for the Saturn V rockets, the crawler has returned to its primary function of transporting Moon-bound spacecraft. John Honeycutt, chair of NASA’s Mission Management Team for Artemis II, expressed the excitement shared by the team, stating, "These are the kinds of days that we live for when you do the kind of work that we do. It really doesn’t get much better than this, and we’re making history." For those interested, NASA will be streaming the rollout live on YouTube, allowing viewers to witness this historic moment as the Artemis II mission progresses. The Artemis program, named after the Greek goddess and twin sister of Apollo, has been in the making for over two decades, with Artemis II set to be its inaugural crewed flight.
