Four astronauts depart for the Moon with a fiery send-off from Cape Canaveral

At the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, an exciting new chapter in space exploration has begun as three American astronauts and one Canadian astronaut launched into orbit on Wednesday evening. Their mission marks the first leg of a nine-day journey around the Moon, utilizing the formidable Space Launch System rocket. Standing an impressive 322 feet tall, the rocket roared to life at 6:35 PM EDT (22:35 UTC) as four hydrogen-fueled RS-25 engines, complemented by two solid rocket boosters, generated a staggering 8.8 million pounds of thrust. This launch not only surpassed the power of the iconic Saturn V rocket from the Apollo era but also showcased the advancements made in space technology over the past decades. As the rocket ascended into the sky, a powerful sonic boom echoed across the landscape, leaving spectators in awe of the fiery display. Inside the Orion spacecraft at the top of the rocket, Commander Reid Wiseman, a seasoned Navy captain and former test pilot, provided updates via radio, joined by pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. The Artemis II mission represents a significant milestone for NASA, which has invested nearly $100 billion over the last 20 years in the Artemis program. As the agency competes with China for lunar exploration supremacy, this mission is a crucial step toward returning humans to the Moon's surface for the first time since 1972. While Artemis II will not involve a landing, it lays the groundwork for future missions, including the anticipated Artemis IV mission set for 2028. This mission is pivotal for testing the transportation systems that will ultimately ferry astronauts between the Orion spacecraft and the lunar surface, with collaborations from SpaceX and Blue Origin for developing human-rated landers. Moreover, Axiom Space is crafting new spacesuits designed for lunar environments.
