NASA’s DART mission shifted the orbits of two asteroids

On September 26, 2022, NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft made history by colliding with a binary asteroid system. The mission involved deliberately crashing a probe into Dimorphos, a moonlet measuring 160 meters across, demonstrating the efficacy of the kinetic impact method in planetary defense. The immediate outcome of this bold maneuver was a significant reduction in Dimorphos' orbital period around its larger companion, Didymos, decreasing by an impressive 33 minutes. While such a change might seem minor, it served as a proof of concept for protecting Earth from potential catastrophic asteroid impacts. As long-term observational data began to roll in, scientists realized that the impact had broader implications than initially thought. DART not only affected the moonlet's local orbit but also altered the trajectory of the entire Didymos binary system around the Sun. This measurement process, which involved tracking the orbital shift of the 780-meter-wide Didymos and its moonlet from millions of miles away, posed a remarkable challenge. The effects of the DART impact were subtle and required extensive observation to fully understand. Researchers, led by Rahil Makadia from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, dedicated themselves to analyzing the data collected over months. To detect the minuscule changes in the system's heliocentric trajectory, they utilized a method known as stellar occultation. This technique involves observing the brief disappearance of a distant star as an asteroid passes in front of it, allowing astronomers to precisely calculate the asteroid's position with remarkable accuracy. Through their meticulous work, Makadia's team has confirmed the significant impact of the DART mission, showcasing humanity's ability to influence celestial bodies and enhance our planetary defense strategies.
