Rocket Report: Russian megaconstellation takes off; Isar preps for second launch

This week, the agency revealed plans for a lunar base and a nuclear-powered rocket aimed at Mars, just as preparations ramp up for the Artemis II mission, which will see a crew of four orbit the Moon. As excitement builds, the Ars space team is set to cover the Artemis II launch extensively, potentially leading to a brief hiatus of the Rocket Report next week to focus solely on this landmark event. Each issue typically features insights on various rocket categories—small, medium, and heavy-lift—as well as a preview of upcoming launches. NASA's recent announcement about pausing work on a lunar space station, in favor of establishing a surface base on the Moon, aligns with the evolving space policy trends observed under the previous administration. The agency has invested nearly $4.5 billion since 2019 in developing a human-tended complex in lunar orbit, and now faces questions about the future of the components already under construction worldwide. The centerpiece of the Gateway program, known as the Power and Propulsion Element, is nearing readiness for launch. NASA's revised exploration strategy, unveiled during a comprehensive event at its Washington headquarters, includes plans to reallocate this core module for a nuclear-electric propulsion demonstration mission in deep space. The upcoming mission, dubbed Space Reactor-1 Freedom (SR-1 Freedom), will pioneer the use of nuclear-powered engines, which are recognized for their efficiency compared to traditional chemical rockets. These engines come in two varieties—nuclear-thermal and nuclear-electric. While nuclear-thermal rockets offer higher thrust, nuclear-electric engines promise improved efficiency, though neither has yet been tested in space. According to NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, "We will launch the first-of-its-kind interplanetary mission called SR-1 Freedom before the end of 2028, showcasing the power of fission and our ability to transport mass efficiently through space." This ambitious plan signals a transformative era for space exploration, with the potential to revolutionize how we approach interplanetary travel.
