NASA reports no significant leaks in Artemis II fueling test, eyes March 6 launch

NASA's recent fueling test of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket concluded successfully, paving the way for a potential launch of the Artemis II mission on March 6. Unlike the initial attempt on February 2, this latest test at Kennedy Space Center in Florida showed no significant leaks, instilling confidence among mission managers. In response to previous challenges, technicians replaced seals after a hydrogen leak was detected during the earlier fueling attempt. This time, the new seals functioned effectively. Lori Glaze, acting associate administrator for NASA’s exploration programs, remarked, "For the most part, those fixes all performed pretty well yesterday. We were able to fully fuel the SLS rocket within the planned timeline." With this successful test, the Artemis II mission remains on track for liftoff next month. NASA had previously abandoned several launch opportunities in February due to the persistent hydrogen leak encountered during the first practice countdown, known as the Wet Dress Rehearsal (WDR). Glaze indicated that the earliest launch attempt is currently targeted for March 6 but noted that crucial work still lies ahead. If everything proceeds as planned, liftoff could occur during a two-hour window that opens at 8:29 PM EST on March 6 (01:29 UTC on March 7). NASA has also identified additional launch opportunities on March 7, 8, 9, and 11, though a delay until April remains possible. The Artemis II mission is expected to last between nine and ten days, carrying NASA’s Orion spacecraft and a crew that includes commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, and mission specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen. This mission will mark a historic moment as the crew travels farther from Earth than any humans have before, making them the first to approach the Moon since 1972, before returning for a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.
