Flying to the Moon for the first time in 54 years is risky—but how risky?

During a recent press conference, NASA officials addressed the significant risks associated with the upcoming Artemis II Moon mission. As the first crewed mission to approach the Moon since 1972, concerns about potential hazards are both valid and crucial, not only for the astronauts but also for NASA's workforce, government officials, and the public who support this ambitious endeavor. Artemis II will undertake a journey that is over 1,000 times farther from Earth than the International Space Station, venturing several thousand miles beyond the Moon's far side. This nine-day mission will launch from Florida and culminate in a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, carrying a four-member crew aboard the Space Launch System and Orion spacecraft, which have only previously flown together once during an uncrewed test. The novelty of this mission complicates risk assessment, as NASA officials highlighted the limited data available. Lori Glaze, the acting associate administrator for exploration system development, noted that while an assessment has been completed, its practical implications may be limited. She cautioned against placing too much emphasis on numerical risk evaluations, suggesting that while they offer some insights, they do not provide a complete picture of the mission's challenges. Glaze emphasized the importance of understanding the relative levels of risk involved in such groundbreaking space exploration.
