NASA says it needs to haul the Artemis II rocket back to the hangar for repairs

In a significant update concerning the Artemis II mission, NASA has announced that the rocket will have to be returned to its hangar for necessary repairs. This development comes just a day after officials expressed optimism about a potential launch around the Moon as early as next month. The issue arose on Friday evening when data indicated a disruption in the helium flow to the upper stage of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman shared this news through a post on social media, underscoring that engineers are currently investigating the underlying cause of the malfunction. Isaacman elaborated in a subsequent post that any repairs must occur inside the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), prompting immediate preparations to transport the towering 322-foot (98-meter) rocket from Launch Complex 39B back to the VAB. This operation will utilize NASA’s crawler-transporter for the 4-mile journey. "Regardless of the potential fault, accessing and remediating any of these issues can only be performed in the VAB," Isaacman stated. He acknowledged the disappointment felt by many, particularly the dedicated NASA team who have been tirelessly preparing for this mission. NASA had initially targeted a launch window starting March 6, with five potential launch opportunities throughout the month. These dates are carefully selected based on the Moon's position, the mission's trajectory, and environmental conditions. Now, with the helium issue identified, the March launch window has been effectively closed. Earlier this month, NASA had already postponed launch attempts due to a hydrogen leak discovered during a fueling test. After successfully replacing seals in the fueling line and conducting a second test with no significant leaks, hopes were high for a March launch. However, the recent helium complication has altered those plans significantly, pushing the next possible launch dates to begin on April 1.
