Rockets and spaceships are cool, but the humanity of Artemis II resonated most

HOUSTON—The mission has reached its conclusion. The four astronauts who ventured beyond the Moon during NASA's Artemis II mission have safely returned to Houston, reuniting with their families. However, the insights gained from this groundbreaking mission are just beginning to unfold. Over the course of their nine-day adventure, there were key takeaways regarding the mission's execution. The Space Launch System rocket performed exceptionally well, and the Orion spacecraft proved capable of making the journey to the Moon and back. Though some adjustments will be necessary before the next Artemis mission, this is to be expected for a program that has taken two decades to prepare for its first crewed flight. In addition to the technical aspects, such as addressing hydrogen leaks at the launch pad and minor issues with the spacecraft's toilet, the human element of the mission stands out. NASA made an excellent choice in its selection of astronauts for Artemis II. The selection process, often shrouded in mystery, proved effective when Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen were introduced at a lavish event at Ellington Field three years ago. As they returned to Hangar 135 on Saturday afternoon, Wiseman, Glover, Koch, and Hansen brought with them a renewed sense of purpose and excitement, having just completed their circumlunar journey. While their welcome back wasn't as extravagant as their initial announcement, it carried a weight of significance. NASA allowed the success of Artemis II to speak for itself, marking a momentous occasion in space exploration history.
