Artemis 2: iPhones hitch a ride on NASA’s Moon mission

On April 2, NASA's Artemis 2 mission is set to launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, marking a significant milestone in lunar exploration after a 50-year hiatus. In an innovative move, the space agency has approved the use of iPhones for astronauts aboard this mission, enabling them to document their historic journey to the Moon. The Artemis 2 mission will feature a crew of four astronauts: Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen. These astronauts will embark on a crewed lunar flyby, equipped with iPhones tucked inside their suits. This allows them to capture memorable moments and maintain organization throughout the mission. However, the devices will remain in Airplane Mode at all times to prevent any interference with the spacecraft's operations. This initiative stems from a rule introduced by NASA in 2026 under Administrator Jared Isaacman, allowing astronauts to carry modern smartphones for personal documentation. While the iPhones will be used exclusively for taking photos and videos, all technical operations will be restricted. The decision ensures that these devices will not connect to Earth networks or disrupt the spacecraft's systems. With iPhones joining the ranks of equipment used in space, their advanced cameras may rival traditional professional photography tools, making them ideal for capturing unique moments in deep space. Their compact design and user-friendly interface further position iPhones as a practical choice for documenting the mission's significant events. The Artemis 2 mission itself is a crucial 10-day endeavor aimed at testing the spacecraft's systems and operations in preparation for future lunar expeditions. During this period, the crew will conduct various safety checks, practice manual piloting, and perform docking simulations while orbiting the Moon. The data gathered will play a vital role in planning subsequent missions to our celestial neighbor.
