We got an audience with the “Lunar Viceroy” to talk how NASA will build a Moon base

In a lighthearted moment at the Ignition event in Washington, DC, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman affectionately dubbed Carlos Garcia-Galan the agency's 'Lunar Viceroy.' This playful remark highlighted Garcia-Galan's new prominent role as the manager of NASA's Moon base initiative, a significant challenge that he has eagerly embraced after years as a behind-the-scenes engineer. Garcia-Galan, now officially titled program executive, emerged as a key figure during the event, discussing the agency's strategic shift towards establishing a base on the lunar surface. In an exclusive interview, he shared insights into this groundbreaking project and the transition from the previously proposed Lunar Gateway. When asked about the difficulties of moving from the Gateway project to focusing on a Moon base, Garcia-Galan acknowledged that change can be challenging. However, he emphasized the importance of concentrating on the Moon's surface objectives, stating, "While I believe an orbiting outpost has its value, our immediate focus must be on bringing humans back to the Moon and building an outpost there." His enthusiasm was palpable as he expressed excitement for the monumental task ahead. He noted the need to leverage NASA's full range of resources and expertise to ensure success. "We will collaborate with all programs related to lunar exploration, including the previous Gateway architecture, to integrate the best elements into our Moon base plans. There's incredible work already in place; we just need to prioritize what is essential for our critical path." Garcia-Galan's drive and the support of the entire NASA team will be pivotal as they embark on this ambitious new chapter in lunar exploration.
