We managed to glean some interesting details about the Artemis III mission

NASA has officially revealed the crew for its highly anticipated Artemis III mission, set to launch no earlier than summer 2027. During the announcement, officials from the space agency detailed plans for the crew to dock with both a Blue Origin lander and a SpaceX Starship lander while in low-Earth orbit. Despite the informative presentation, several crucial questions remain unanswered regarding the readiness of these landers and their specific designs. Following the crew announcement, Jeremy Parsons, NASA’s Artemis program manager, engaged in an insightful discussion to address some of these uncertainties. This interview took place at NASA's Johnson Space Center and has been edited for clarity. When asked about the condition of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and the launch pad following the Artemis II mission, Parsons expressed confidence. "The mobile launcher is honestly in great shape after the launch; the modifications we made between Artemis I and II proved to be highly successful," he noted. He added that preparations are underway for stacking the boosters, which have recently arrived at the rotation processing surge facility. Regarding the mobile launcher, Parsons mentioned that while some damage was found, approximately 90% of the repairs have been completed. "We’re re-welding a few areas in the flame hole and want to finish this work before stacking the boosters, as we prefer not to weld with propellant present," he explained, anticipating that this work will be wrapped up by early July. As for the testing of the SLS rocket, Parsons confirmed that the team plans to conduct a wet dress rehearsal before placing the Orion spacecraft atop the rocket. He acknowledged previous issues with cryogenic seals and revealed that the team is currently redesigning these components for the upcoming mission. The rehearsal will involve a short-stack configuration, where the boosters and core stage will be assembled, thermal protection systems will be completed, and the rocket will be filled with propellant to ensure seal integrity.
