NASA assigns crew for Artemis III, sets aggressive timeline for flying it

NASA has officially announced the crew for its upcoming Artemis III mission during a spirited event at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. The chosen team, comprised entirely of seasoned male astronauts with military backgrounds, is set to embark on a journey into low-Earth orbit. The announcement took place in the dimly lit Teague Auditorium, where a crowd of enthusiastic friends, family, and NASA personnel celebrated the momentous occasion. The Artemis III mission is designed to connect the recently completed Artemis II lunar flyby, which took place in April, with the anticipated lunar landing of the Artemis IV mission. "We are the unifying link between Artemis II and Artemis IV," said astronaut Bresnik during the event. The mission, which is scheduled to launch no earlier than summer 2027, aims to mitigate risks before sending astronauts to the Moon. NASA's decision to incorporate this low-Earth orbit mission came after new Administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized the need for a precautionary step. The Artemis III flight is expected to last approximately two weeks and will involve three separate launches and two dockings in low-Earth orbit. The first of these launches will feature a Blue Origin lander test vehicle, capable of remaining in orbit for up to 90 days. Following this, the four astronauts will board the Orion spacecraft, lifted by a Space Launch System rocket, to rendezvous with the Blue Moon lander. Once docked, the crew will assess the life support systems aboard the Blue Moon and conduct various operations, with Orion managing the combined flight of both vehicles.
