iPhone 17 Pro Max captures stunning Earth photos during NASA Artemis 2 Mission

On April 1, NASA’s Artemis 2 mission launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying four astronauts on a groundbreaking journey into space. This mission is pivotal for NASA's goal of returning humans to the Moon. Notably, it marks a historic first: astronauts were permitted to bring their personal smartphones on board. To document their extraordinary experience, the crew members took four iPhone 17 Pro Max devices with them. NASA has already shared three stunning images on Flickr, showcasing our planet from space. The photos feature astronauts Reid Wiseman and Christina Koch gazing out at Earth from the Orion spacecraft, captured on April 2, 2026. In one of the posts, NASA wrote, "Thinking of You, Earth," highlighting Commander Reid Wiseman's view of our home planet as they journey toward the Moon. This innovative decision to allow personal devices on Artemis 2 came shortly before the mission, under the direction of NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. The astronauts’ iPhones are designated solely for personal photography, ensuring they can capture high-quality memories during their mission. To maintain the spacecraft's safety, the phones will remain in airplane mode, preventing any interference with onboard systems or attempts to connect to terrestrial networks. NASA employs a meticulous four-step approval process for allowing devices like smartphones on missions. This includes rigorous safety reviews, hazard assessments concerning movable parts or materials, planning fixes to mitigate risks, and conducting tests to ensure those measures are effective.
