NASA takes steps toward building Moon Base, including discussing a “perimeter”

NASA has taken significant steps toward establishing a lunar base, recently announcing contract awards for the foundational elements of this ambitious project. Among these developments are two rovers designed to enhance astronaut mobility on the Moon. During a press briefing, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized the agency's commitment to this initiative, which was unveiled just two months ago as part of a broader strategy to return to lunar exploration. "For those waiting patiently, the grand return is close at hand, and we will not slow down," he stated confidently. Carlos Garcia-Galan, the manager overseeing the lunar base project, revealed that NASA has selected Astrolab and Lunar Outpost to create approximately one-ton rovers, set for delivery to the Moon by 2028. Astrolab has secured a contract worth $219 million for its rover, named “CLV-1,” while Lunar Outpost will receive $220 million for their “Pegasus” rover. These contracts build on prior agreements made two years ago. Each rover is expected to have a driving range of 200 kilometers and will be capable of autonomous navigation, directed by operators on Earth, as well as manual operation by astronauts. Furthermore, Blue Origin has been contracted to deliver each rover to the lunar surface using its Blue Moon Mark 1 lander, with the delivery contracts totaling $280.4 million. This partnership solidifies Blue Origin's crucial role in NASA's lunar aspirations, especially in transporting substantial cargo, including the previously contracted Viper vehicle. The news conference highlighted an important point: despite decades since humanity first set foot on the Moon, many mysteries about the lunar environment remain. As NASA continues to forge ahead, the quest for knowledge about our nearest celestial neighbor is more vital than ever.
