Houston, you’ve got a space shuttle… only NASA won’t say which one

NASA's leadership has announced plans to transfer one of its retired space shuttles to Houston, yet the specific shuttle remains a mystery. Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas), who has been instrumental in efforts to relocate the space shuttle Discovery from the Smithsonian to Space Center Houston, expressed his support for this decision in a statement released on August 5. "There is no better place for one of NASA's space shuttles to be displayed than Space City," Cornyn stated, emphasizing Houston's historic role in human space exploration. He highlighted that the city has been crucial to many landmark achievements, from astronaut training to the historic Apollo 11 moon landing. While Senator Cornyn celebrated the announcement, he did not specify which shuttle would be relocated. The recent legislation mandating the move required NASA to select a "space vehicle" that had previously flown and carried astronauts, but it did not name a specific orbiter. This legislative push, part of the "One Big Beautiful Bill" signed by President Donald Trump, was inspired by a proposal from Cornyn and Texas Senator Ted Cruz. A spokesperson for acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy confirmed that a selection has been made, but no further information has been disclosed. The legislation stipulates that the decision must involve a designated entity for displaying the shuttle, adding to the anticipation surrounding the announcement. Cornyn's statement hinted that the chosen location will be a non-profit organization situated near the Johnson Space Center, but details about the specific shuttle remain under wraps for now.
