Two men fell gravely ill last year; their infections link to deaths in the ’80s

In a perplexing turn of events, four men from the same county in Georgia have been diagnosed with a rare and potentially lethal soil bacterium, typically found in tropical regions. This unusual outbreak has researchers investigating a possible common source, given the genetic similarity of the bacteria involved in each case. The bacterium in question, Burkholderia pseudomallei, is not known to spread between individuals, raising questions about how these men contracted it. Interestingly, one of the affected individuals had visited an endemic area decades ago, while none of the others had traveled recently to locations where the bacterium is commonly found. The timeline of the infections is striking, with the earliest case recorded in 1983, followed by another in 1989, and the two most recent cases occurring just a day apart in September 2024. A newly published study in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases reveals that health officials are now considering the possibility that this dangerous bacterium has been present in Georgia's environment for years, only to emerge again after a significant weather event. Hurricane Helene, which struck Georgia on September 26, is believed to be a catalyst for this resurgence. Historical data indicates that severe weather tends to increase infections of B. pseudomallei in endemic regions. The two men who fell ill shortly after the hurricane both worked outdoors during the storm, where they were exposed to hazardous conditions including mud and heavy rainfall. Specifically, the first patient, a man in his 50s, conducted vehicle inspections and fell ill two days later, while the second patient, a man in his 60s, operated heavy machinery and became ill the following day.
