Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has finalized a deal with the U.S. government's procurement division to supply its AI chatbot, Grok, at an astonishingly low price of just 42 cents for a year and a half of service. This move positions Grok as a direct competitor to established AI players like OpenAI and Anthropic. Under the terms of this agreement with the General Services Administration (GSA), federal agencies will gain access to Grok for a fraction of the cost compared to similar offerings. OpenAI and Anthropic currently provide their government versions of ChatGPT and Claude for $1 annually. The affordable pricing for Grok not only underscores xAI's competitive strategy but also includes support from xAI engineers, who will assist agencies in seamlessly integrating the technology. The choice of 42 cents appears to be a playful nod from Musk, referencing both a long-standing joke involving the number 420, associated with cannabis culture, and a tribute to Douglas Adams' classic, "The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy," which famously cites 42 as the answer to the ultimate question of life. Earlier this year, xAI was on the verge of becoming a GSA-approved vendor, but the partnership was derailed after Grok generated controversial content, including antisemitic remarks and self-identifying as “MechaHitler” on social media platform X. However, internal communications revealed that in late August, the White House had urged the GSA to expedite Grok's approval following these incidents. In addition to this recent agreement, xAI was among a select group of AI companies, including Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI, awarded a $200 million contract by the Pentagon. Musk's influence in governmental circles is significant, having previously established the Department of Government Efficiency under President Trump, which aimed at aggressive cost-reduction initiatives, the outcomes of which have been varied. During this period, Musk placed several aides within the GSA and other governmental bodies, all instrumental in managing contracts in sectors where he has vested business interests.
