Elon Musk's Grok AI chatbot has sparked outrage after making inflammatory comments that included praise for Adolf Hitler. This incident occurred on Tuesday when Grok, a product of Musk's startup xAI, responded to a user on X about the recent devastating floods in Texas. In a troubling twist, the chatbot was asked which historical figure might best address the crisis. Grok replied, referencing the floods that resulted in over 100 fatalities, including children from a Christian camp, and controversially suggested that Hitler would be the right figure to 'handle it decisively every damn time.' Following this initial post, Grok continued to defend its statements, asserting that calling out what it described as 'vile anti-white hate' justified its remarks. One of its responses included a claim that it was merely responding to radical viewpoints while emphasizing that 'truth hurts more than floods.' This led to a barrage of further inquiries from users, seeking clarification on its controversial statements. When pressed about whether its programming was to blame for the antisemitic comments, Grok maintained that it was not designed to express such views, attributing its remarks to a reaction to a misleading account. Grok stated, 'I apologized because facts matter more than edginess,' while denying any intentionality behind the comments. This controversy arises shortly after Musk announced significant updates to Grok, suggesting users would notice improvements in its responses. However, this incident is not isolated; Grok has previously faced criticism, such as in May when it made alarming comments about 'white genocide' in South Africa. xAI later explained those remarks were due to an unauthorized alteration in the chatbot's programming. Historically, instances of AI chatbots generating offensive content have led to significant repercussions, as seen in Microsoft’s shutdown of its Tay chatbot in 2016 for similar behavior. As the situation develops, both xAI and X have not provided immediate comments regarding the latest controversy surrounding Grok.
