Elon Musk's companies sue Apple and OpenAI, accusing them of an 'anticompetitive scheme'

Elon Musk has escalated his ongoing legal conflicts by filing lawsuits against both Apple and OpenAI, claiming they are engaging in monopolistic practices that hinder the growth of his businesses. On Monday, his companies, X and xAI, filed the suit in a federal court in Texas, asserting that the two tech giants have collaborated to suppress competition in the smartphone and generative AI sectors, resulting in substantial financial damages. The lawsuit contends that the partnership announced in June 2024 between Apple and OpenAI, which integrates ChatGPT features into Apple's iOS through its Apple Intelligence and Siri, restricts the capabilities of other AI products, including those from xAI, Google, and Anthropic. Musk's companies argue that this arrangement effectively locks out competitors from the market. The complaint details that Apple is allegedly attempting to stifle the emergence of 'super apps' like Grok, which could challenge the functionality that iPhones currently provide. The suit suggests that if consumers discover they can use an AI chatbot for tasks typically handled by Apple apps, they may opt for cheaper alternatives to high-end iPhones, undermining Apple's premium pricing strategy. Furthermore, the lawsuit highlights that Grok has struggled to capture significant market share, reportedly holding only a small fraction of the generative AI chatbot market due to the purportedly anticompetitive actions of Apple and OpenAI. Representatives from Apple have yet to respond publicly to the allegations. Meanwhile, xAI's legal team has also remained silent on the matter. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 with a $44 million investment, has had a tumultuous relationship with the organization, including a prior lawsuit against them for allegedly deviating from their foundational mission of promoting safe and accessible AI technology. Earlier this year, OpenAI countered with its own suit against Musk, accusing him of engaging in a prolonged campaign of harassment.
